Essay, Chenin Blanc blend, Agter-Paarl, South Africa

78% Chenin Blanc, 13% Viognier, 9% Roussanne

A medium-bodied white blend made primarily from South Africa's classic white variety, Chenin Blanc. Chenin Blanc is known for its generosity of fruit and friendliness towards most foods. This wine shows typical Chenin Blanc aromas of pineapple, lychee, and guava. A few months of lees contact enhances the texture of this wine, while still maintaining a fruity palate and fresh finish. The addition of Viognier and Roussanne adds complexity with each component contributing its distinctive characteristics to the blend, bringing out hints of pear, melon, and granadilla.
This wine is perfect on its own as an aperitif but will also pair well with a wide range of foods, especially sushi, oysters, Asian curries, sweet-and-sour dishes, and summer salads.

“Essay” refers to the popular abbreviation for South Africa (SA) as well as implying an “assemblage” or blending of things to create a whole greater than its parts. Produced by partners José Conde and Tyrrel Myburgh, Essay Wines consists of two blended wines produced in a Mediterranean style representing the best from the Agter-Paarl area. The vineyards are unirrigated and planted on old Malmesbury shale soils producing wines with distinctive flavor and texture.

Doravante, Tinto, Bairrada, Portugal

Baga and Touriga Nacional are grown in the Bairrada, co-fermented and aged in 3000-liter oak vats for 12 months. These two grapes do a beautiful dance together presenting red fruits, dark fruits, lilacs, and peppery earth notes on the nose. The palate is equally complex with tobacco, leather, chocolate covered cherries, rosewater, and a Cab Franc-like herbacous-ness.. Bairrada is a wine region in northern Portugal that is attracting a lot of attention at the moment. It has a moderate climate, influenced by the Atlantic to the west, and some interesting soils, including quite a bit of limestone, although there are also some sandy terroirs. And it also has the intriguing Baga as its lead red grape variety.

L’Agramante, Ciaülà Côtes du Rhône, France

VARIETIES: 60% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 10% Cinsault, 5% Counoise

Ciaula means Crow in Sicilian- where the winemaker hails from. It references a character in an old story who works in the mines and one day, while exiting the mines, looks up and sees the moon and realizes the beauty for the first time. The deeper meaning is if you never look up from your work, you may miss your dreams. Older vine Grenache and longer maceration give this cuvée more depth and structure while still being fresh and bright.
