Domaine Cazes, Macabeu (Macabeo) Languedoc-Rousillon, France 2024
100% Macabeu. Natural method. This wine with its special colour is a white wine vinified in the same way as a red wine with a longer maceration time. Its orange color comes from the skin of the grape which releases its pigments. The nose reveals aromas of bergamot, tea wood, curry, orange peel and cloves. The palate is exotic, with hints of bitter orange and kumquat. This wine is full-bodied on the palate, with a finish of dried fruit (popcorn). Memorable.

Fattoria San Francesco, Ciro Rosso, Gaglioppo
"Enotria" (the land of wine). That's what the ancient Greeks had to say about the wild deep Southern Italian region Calabria. This region provides the toe to the Italian peninsula and is home of the indigenous variety Gaglioppo that was brought by the earliest Greek colonizers. A magic and untouched landscape more akin to the wilderness of inland Greece and Northern Africa, stupendously Mediterranean. CIRO' is the most important and historical wine denomination f this region. Legend and now archeology has it that the wine of Ciro' was offered to ancient Olympic champions in Greece 3000 years ago. The winery Fattoria San Francesco is nested in a XVI century monastery where vineyards and olive groves were planted. In Italy the winery boasts "cult status" amongst Somms and wine industry peers, having long been considered one of the most traditional and classic producers of Calabrian wine. From those vineyards, the wines from the Fattoria San Francesco are still produced, and the monastery is the center of the agricultural activity. Gallioppo is the most important red wine grape in Calabria and Greco the white. The Iuzzolini family has recently taken over the winery and renovated as well as improved production on all levels. 12 days maceration, selected yeasts, brief passage in used French oak barriques. Mixed array of estate vineyards on white clay in the CIRO DOC. Organically farmed. Superbly classic example of a Calabrian red. Lovely soft and ripe fruit with exotic dark flower

Azienda Agricola, Rosso, Tuscany, Italy 2017
A rare red blend from husband and wife, organic farmers, and winemaking team Jarkko and Josephin Peranen. This earthy and elegant wine is primarily Merlot and Sangiovese with a bit of Syrah and Petit Verdot. While this may sound like a rich and potentially tannic combination, in their hands, with their hand-tended, high-altitude vines, it is a lithe, food-appropriate, deliciously drinkable wine. True to all of their wines, the Ciclope has been held until it shows its absolute best. Named after their dog, who lost an eye in an unfortunate tussle with a Tuscan porcupine, it is a unique bottling demonstrating the finesse Jarkko and Josephin are known for.

El Maestro Sierra, Pedro Ximenez, Jerez de la Frontera, Andalucia, Spain
Site: Jerez de la Frontera Grapes: Pedro Ximénez Solera Aging: 15 years Tasting Notes: A great nose of exotic spices and almost red fruits combine with more classic caramel overtones. With great acidity the wine is light on its feet and almost refreshing. In 1832 the master carpenter José Antonio Sierra founded El Maestro Sierra. As one of the top co-opers in the area, José Antonio was the person who made the barrels for all of the big Sherry houses. After years of making barrels for everyone else he came to the conclusion that he could produce Sherries that were better than what the big Sherry houses were cranking out, so he went about opening up his own little winery. This little up-start Sherry producer was not welcomed in world of nobility-owned Sherry houses and so the local gentry did everything they could to stop him. Fortunately the quality of his sherry prevailed over their efforts and José Antonio Sierra became one of the top Almacenistas (stock-holders) of high quality Sherries. Poking fun at his struggle, the label depicts an allegorical fox hunt with the nobles hunting El Maestro Sierra’s fox.
